Overview

The Production Show Set Designer is responsible for leading the development of drawings and drawing packages depicting design and art direction for all show and scenic components of a Project. As part of the Design team, this individual will assist the lead Designer or Creative Director in the development of details creatively integrating the myriad of show, facility, equipment and elements into the overall creative design.

 

Responsibilities

  • As directed by the Creative Director, or Director of the Design Team creates the designs and details the various show elements of an attraction, such as scenery, special effects, show action equipment, animated figures, props, animated props, and more. 
  • During design, participates in design, and technical reviews. Responsible for developing creative design, color boards, sketching, drafting, and models and other creative output that outline solutions to integrate elements into a themed environment. Evaluates sightlines, visual intrusion and concealment of non-theatrical equipment within an “on-stage” environment.
  • During construction, works with the installation team to oversee contractors, develops in-field solutions and follow-up documentation. Ensures project completion of documentation of art and finish specifications, materials specification and design drawings.
  • Establishes, builds, and maintains positive and productive team relationships based on open communication and teamwork with project partners, departments, disciplines, and personnel.
  • Participates in the development and implementation of presentation artwork outlining creative goals and intent to gain internal and external approvals.
  • Work in collaboration with other team members in developing ideas.
  • Provide concept design of models, sets, show, and scenic elements through various visual tools that includes the use of art, illustration, architecture, drawings, paint, sketches, storyboards, 2D and 3D digital design and multimedia mediums.
  • Demonstrate the ability to communicate creative concepts using multiple mediums.
  • All other duties as assigned. 

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Architecture, Fine Arts, Design, Theater, Graphics or degree in other related field is preferred.
  • Training in arts, show set design and themed entertainment environment preferred, with minimum 5-7 years experience in related fast-paced creative environment.
  • Must have successfully designed, developed and assembled several project show set design packages; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Detailed understanding of technical issues.
  • Ability to work in all phases of projects to project closeout, design and field installation. Will be assigned to a wide range of tasks and project sizes and types.
  • Artistic visual skills, including drawing, painting, sketching, story-boarding, and/or computer design
  • Strong understanding of digital creative mediums (i.e. Photoshop, Painter, Illustrator, 3D Studio Max, Maya, Z-Brush, Sketch Up, etc.)
  • Working understanding of CAD drafting programs; knowledge of Revit is a plus.
  • Ability to read technical drawings
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Self-Motivated and a team player
